Avnee Taneja
Counselling Psychologist
Department of Psychology
I'm Avnee Taneja, a Counselling Psychologist based in Gurugram and the Founder of Marea Wellness. I work with adults and young adults who are navigating emotional and behavioural challenges, whether that's anxiety, grief, relationship patterns, life transitions, addiction, or simply a sense of feeling stuck and not quite knowing why. My work is collaborative and unhurried.
I don't believe in one-size-fits-all approaches. What I bring to each session is genuine curiosity about your experience, a non-judgmental space, and a commitment to understanding what is actually going on beneath the surface and not just the presenting problem.
My academic background gives me a broad lens through which to understand human behaviour in its full complexity. My foundation includes a BA in Psychology, Theatre, and Literature from Christ University, Bangalore, followed by an MA in Criminology from the University of Manchester, UK, and an MA in Clinical Psychology from IGNOU.
I have worked across clinical and rehabilitation settings, and I hold specialized practitioner certifications in CBT, DBT, Art Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Addiction Counselling, and Mindfulness. I draw on these not as fixed methods, but as tools I adapt to what each person needs. Therapy, as I see it, is a space for reflection and honest exploration. It's not about being told what to do or being handed a quick fix. It's about developing a clearer understanding of yourself and your patterns, your responses, and your needs, so that real and lasting change becomes possible. If something here resonates, I'd be glad to connect.
CBT is an evidence-based approach that helps you understand the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Much of our distress comes from patterns of thinking that feel automatic and fixed but with the right tools, those patterns can shift.
In practice, I use CBT to help clients identify unhelpful thought patterns and gently begin questioning them. This isn't about positive thinking or dismissing difficult emotions. It's about developing a more accurate and workable relationship with your own mind.
Sessions include practical tools like cognitive restructuring and behavioural activation which you can use between sessions in your daily life. I hold a professional certification in CBT and have applied it extensively across anxiety, depression, and OCD.
DBT is particularly effective for people who experience emotions intensely where feelings can feel overwhelming, relationships are complicated, or reactions seem hard to control. It combines cognitive behavioural principles with mindfulness-based strategies to build four core skill sets: emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.
I draw on DBT to help clients build a steadier relationship with their emotional world and learning to sit with difficult feelings without being consumed by them, and to respond with greater clarity and intention. The skills are practical and grounding, and many clients find them genuinely transformative over time.
SFBT is a forward-looking, collaborative approach that focuses less on problems and more on the direction you want to move toward. It is built on the recognition that you already carry many of the resources and strengths needed for change and that small, deliberate steps can create meaningful momentum.
This approach works particularly well for people navigating specific life transitions, clarity questions, or moments when they need to move forward rather than spend extended time processing the past. It's purposeful without being rushed.
A significant amount of our emotional experience lives in the body , in tension, in numbness, in the way we hold our breath without noticing. Mindfulness and somatic practices bring attention back to the present moment and to the body as a source of information, not just sensation.
I integrate these approaches to help clients develop greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, and a quieter relationship with their own nervous system. This is especially useful for those working through trauma, anxiety, or chronic stress. No prior mindfulness experience is needed as the work simply invites a slower, more attentive way of being with yourself
Some experiences are difficult or even impossible to reach through words alone. Art therapy offers a different kind of access to our inner experience: through image, colour, and the act of making, we can express and process things that haven't yet found language.
I am a certified Art Therapy practitioner. In sessions, this is not about artistic skill or creating something to be judged. It is about using creative process as a mode of exploration, particularly useful for trauma, grief, emotional numbness, or for clients who find traditional talk therapy limiting. It is always client-led and held within a safe, trauma-informed frame.
Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind and the layer beneath our conscious thought where deeply held beliefs, fears, and habitual patterns often reside. It involves a calm, deeply relaxed state in which we can explore and gently work with these underlying layers in a way that is both purposeful and safe.
I hold a professional certification in Hypnotherapy and integrate it where it is appropriate and consented to. It can be particularly effective for anxiety, phobias, patterns that feel resistant to change, and for clients who want to work at a deeper level than conversation alone can reach.
Addiction, whether to substances, behaviours, or patterns of relationship which are rarely just about the thing itself. It is almost always about what the behaviour is managing: pain, disconnection, anxiety, trauma, or an unmet need.
I am a certified Addiction Counselling practitioner. My approach to this work is non-judgmental and exploratory. We look at what lies underneath, build awareness around triggers and cycles, and work toward patterns of living that feel more honest and sustainable. I work with adults across a range of dependency concerns in both individual and rehabilitation contexts.

Stronger Inside: A Workshop on Building Emotional Resilience On 23rd December, I had the opportunity to facilitate a mental health workshop titled “Stronger Inside” with approximately 150 students of Class 8 at Salwan Senior Secondary Girls School.
This session was conducted in collaboration with The Mind Diaries and The Well-Being Trust, with a shared intention of creating a safe and meaningful space for young students to explore their inner worlds.
